Admissions Q&A: Round 3 timeline and application questions for next year

Question: Can you shed some light on the processing / notification timeline for Round 3 applications?

Answer: Our Round 3 deadline was 28 March. Currently, members of our Admissions Committee are reading through the applications. We will be sending out interview invitations in late April, and our decisions will be released 8 May.

Question: I am a prospective student thinking of applying for admission to Darden next fall. As someone who does not have an undergraduate business background, are there any classes that you would advise me to take prior to applying?

Answer: As someone applying without a business degree, rest assured that you are in good company. Only about 1/3 of our student body have undergraduated degrees in business. At the same time, the Darden curriculum is very quantitative. In order to prepare for the classroom, it may be a good idea to develop a strong foundation in accounting, excel and statistics. If I were you, I would reach out to current students and ask for advice on how to prepare.

Question: What types of candidates do you seek to admit into Darden’s MBA program?

Answer: For a more thorough answer than I can offer you on this chat, please refer to the following site to learn about what Darden is looking for: http://www.darden.virginia.edu/web/MBA/Admissions/Admissions-Criteria/. As you can see, there are many parts of an application, and no single element will determine a candidate’s success. Decisions are based on the combination of all parts of the application, hence, a holistic review.

Question:  Is there any competitive advantage that someone has between applying in Round 1 or Round 2?

Answer: In Round 1, every scholarship dollar is available and every seat is open. In Round 2, we have less money to give out and less seats to assign. Round 3 is at the tail end, and it varies from year to year in terms of how much room we have remaining in the class. A great way to indicate your interest in Darden is to apply in Round 1. But, obviously, the most important thing to do is to apply when you can submit your strongest application.
