Entrepreneurship and the Executive Formats – An Overview!

By Susannah Fuller-

Are you interested in the executive formats of the Darden MBA? Are you passionate (or at least curious) about entrepreneurship? Do you like podcasts?

If you answered “Yes” to above questions, this blog post is for you! Did you know we have a growing number of executive format students who are interested in entrepreneurship? True story! Want to hear from some of these students and learn more about the entrepreneurship resources available at UVA? Might we recommend the ExecMBA Podcast?

Hosted by Director of Admissions, Brett Twitty, this podcast covers all things Executive MBA at Darden, and features interviews with students, faculty, staff and alumni. In addition to conversations about career support, work-life balance, case method learning and much, much more, the podcast also has an ongoing series about entrepreneurship. Here are some highlights.

Looking for a comprehensive overview of UVA/Darden’s entrepreneurial resources? Start with our interview with David Touve, Senior Director of UVA’s iLab. David brings a wealth of experience to his work with the iLab, and in this episode he explores the many ways, some informal, others formal, students at Darden can pursue their business ideas. Listen.

Once you’ve listened to David’s interview, check out our conversation with MJ Toms, Director of Education and Experiential Learning at the Batten Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. In this episode, MJ discusses Start-Up Academy, VC Bootcamp and a number of other learning opportunities available to entrepreneurially-inclined students at Darden. Listen.

For a perspective on how we support the career needs of executive format entrepreneurs, be sure to check out our conversation with Sarita Soldz, one of the career advisors who work with our Executive MBA students. Listen.

Want to learn more about the i.Lab Incubator Program? Check out our conversations with Melissa Stefaniak (EMBA ‘19) and Craig van Bremen (EMBA ‘18) about their experiences launching new business ventures. Listen to Melissa’s story. Listen to Craig’s story.

UVA also hosts an entrepreneurship competition called the Entrepreneurship Cup or E Cup. Erin Breitzka and one of her classmates entered their beauty-care concept in the 2017 competition, and we chatted with Erin about the experience. Listen.

Did you know we have an entrepreneurship club for executive format students? In this wide-ranging interview, recent 2018 graduates Ruchir Ghildiyal and Dan Fitzhenry detail some of the student-led initiatives that have sprung up around entrepreneurship over the past couple years. Listen.

We also have several recent students who were already running or engaged with start-ups when they began our program. Corbin Norman (GEMBA ‘18) was on his third venture and Hanna Dobbels (EMBA ‘19) had launched her own barre studio. Patrick Weeks (EMBA ‘18) was working for Sandboxx and maintaining a successful Marine Corps blog. All came to Darden to formalize their business training and grow as leaders. Listen to Corbin’s story. Listen to Hanna’s story. Listen to Patrick’s story.

Of course, stay tuned for future episodes! We are recording interviews for our second season right now and quickly closing in on Episode 50! New podcast episodes are published weekly, so be sure to subscribe via iTunes or Podbean
