Preparing for the Darden interview is an exciting step in your MBA journey.

Knowing what to expect and how to approach each question can help you confidently showcase your unique experiences, aspirations and potential impact at Darden. Remember, our signature interview style is conversational in nature, so expect a friendly conversation where you can showcase your personal narrative!

In our Full-Time MBA application process, interviews are conducted by either Admissions Committee members or Second Year students. In our Executive MBA, Part-Time MBA and Future Year Scholars application processes, interviews are conducted by members of our Admissions Committee.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when preparing for the Darden interview:

Timing does not reflect candidacy

It’s important to note that the timing of your interview invitation is not indicative of your candidacy status. Applicants can be invited to interview at any time until the release for each round. Focus less on the timing and more on preparing to present your best self during the interview.

A level playing field

We believe in a fair and unbiased evaluation process – that’s why our interviewers do not read your application or resume in advance. This ensures the conversation focuses on your ability to articulate your story, motivations and alignment with Darden’s core values. Approach the interview with confidence, knowing your interviewer will genuinely get to know you.

Sharing your journey

During the interview, you have the opportunity to provide a 5 to 10 minute overview of your personal, academic and professional journey. Be mindful of this time expectation and focus on highlighting the most significant aspects of your story, i.e., how your lived experiences have shaped your character, values and ambitions. Remember that the interview is a two-way conversation, so leave room for the interviewer to ask questions that allow for a deeper exploration of your unique story.

Why Darden?

Articulating the reasons you are pursuing an MBA is crucial. Delve into your short and long-term career goals, showcasing your vision for growth and impact. Explaining why the Darden approach resonates with your aspirations will demonstrate your understanding of our values and teaching methods.

Showcasing resilience

Demonstrating resilience, adaptability and problem solving skills will leave a lasting impression. We want to understand how you handle difficult situations and learn from them. Be ready to share an example of a challenging workplaces scenario and how you approached and learned from it.

Embracing diversity and collaboration

Be prepared to discuss your experience working with people from different backgrounds, perspectives and experiences. Highlight your ability to collaborate, respect different viewpoints and foster inclusivity.

Ask thoughtful questions

As much as we want to get to know you, we want you to get to know us! We encourage you to come prepared with thoughtful inquiries that go beyond what can be easily found on our website. Engage with your interviewer in a meaningful conversation about Darden and Charlottesville’s culture, resources and unique offerings

Each student brings their full self to the MBA experience and your unique background, aspirations and perspectives shape your journey. We look forward to getting to know you on a personal level, hearing your story and understanding how you will contribute to the Darden community!
