Welcome to the second episode of UVA Darden’s “2025–26 Application Tips” video and podcast series! The Admissions Committee knows that you want to put your best foot forward when it comes to application materials, and we’re here to help.
Today we are discussing best practices for the MBA application resume. We invite you to watch or listen below!
Admissions Committee members Whitney Kestner and Catie Yeilding agree that the resume you craft for the Darden MBA application should differ from a resume that you submit for a job application.
Here are some tried-and-true tips:
- Stick to one page (unless you have more than ten years of professional work experience), black and white colors only and a clear, readable font.
- Do not include photos.
- Your work experience should focus on accomplishments and growth; it shouldn’t read like a job description.
- Highlight your academic background, non-degree course work or certifications, leadership development and interests/hobbies.
- Don’t add an “objective” section — we know you want to come to business school!
“We want you to keep it professional, but when it comes to your hobbies, interests and community involvement, show us a little more about who you are there…share some of those things where you’ve spent your time and energy, because that tells us a lot about what you may also bring to business school. ” — Catie Yeilding
And good news! If you’re admitted, the Career Center Team will help you tailor your resume for MBA recruiting.
"A strong resume in this process is one where the applicant has really considered how to ensure that their history and background is translated well to a broader audience."
