{"id":1948,"date":"2018-11-26T14:43:58","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T19:43:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/brunerblog\/?p=1948"},"modified":"2018-12-03T16:21:33","modified_gmt":"2018-12-03T21:21:33","slug":"notable-books-on-the-financial-crisis-of-2008","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/brunerblog\/2018\/11\/notable-books-on-the-financial-crisis-of-2008\/","title":{"rendered":"Notable Books on the  Financial Crisis of 2008"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"has-dropcap\">T<\/span>his year, 2018, marks the tenth anniversary of the epicenter of the financial crisis of 2008.\u00a0 The crisis is not something to celebrate, only remember soberly.\u00a0 Memories are short.\u00a0 The crisis was devastating.\u00a0 Moreover, crises will recur: we cannot prevent, only mitigate.\u00a0 Therefore, we should take this opportunity to reflect on the crisis, to learn from it, and to resolve to do better in the future.<\/p>\n<p>At the University of Virginia, some 25 colleagues and I are engaged in a months-long retrospective project on the crisis.\u00a0 This consists of presentations, conferences, and the development of new teaching materials and a new course for students across the University.\u00a0 \u00a0The following list of \u201cnotable books\u201d is a small contribution to the retrospective project, intended to answer the students\u2019 inevitable hunger for more to read on the subject.\u00a0 I have read each one (to varying degrees of detail) and commend them all, not because I agree with them (indeed, I take serious issue with some of them) but because each is important for some special perspective or insight about the causes and consequences of the crisis.\u00a0 Much more will be written about the crisis because its effects are lingering and archives, diaries, and memoirs will eventually open up.\u00a0 Therefore, this list is merely a snapshot of the notable books at November 2018.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend that the reader take a systematic approach to this literature.\u00a0 Begin by getting an historical overview of the crisis (see the <strong>Histories<\/strong>).\u00a0 Then read some of the memoirs to get a feeling for what it was like \u201con the ground\u201d during the crisis (see the <strong>Memoirs<\/strong>).\u00a0 Finally, to build your point of view about the crisis, read some of the volumes that argue <em>why <\/em>the crisis happened and <em>what <\/em>we should do about it (see <strong>Analyses and Policy Recommendations<\/strong>).\u00a0 Each category lists the books alphabetically by author.\u00a0 However, if you have time for only one book in each category, I have <u>underlined<\/u> my recommendation for you.<\/p>\n<p>Read about the financial crisis of 2008 and grow wiser.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Histories<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Blinder, Alan, 2013, <em>After the Music Stopped<\/em>, New York: Penguin.<\/li>\n<li>Irwin, Neil, <em>The Alchemists: Three Central Banks and a World on Fire, <\/em>New York: Penguin.<\/li>\n<li>Gramlich, Edward, 2007, <em>Subprime Mortgages: America\u2019s Latest Boom and Bust, <\/em>Cambridge: Rowman &amp;
