Three Notch’d Brewing Company came on the craft brewing scene in 2013 and has quickly become a mainstay. Around a five-minute drive from Darden, it is a fun and convenient place to grab a drink with friends. They typically have about 10 beers on tap representing a variety of brewing styles. The brewery itself does not serve food, but they usually have one of Charlottesville’s food trucks stationed outside to serve hungry patrons.
You can also take a free brewery tour Saturdays at 2:00 p.m., and learn a bit more about the history of the place. The brewery takes its name from Three Notch’d Road, which was a colonial east-west thoroughfare famed for a particular Revolutionary War escapade. The British, fresh off a victory in Richmond, were pursuing a group of colonial leaders, including Thomas Jefferson, who were hiding out at Jefferson’s Monticello home. One Captain Jack Jouett heard the British approaching about 40 miles from Monticello, and after seeing them stop for a rest, road hard on Three Notch’d Road to warn the leaders gathered at Monticello. Doing so, he rode his way into a local legend — Captain Jack’s Midnight Ride.
