On calendars everywhere “Juneteenth” is showing up. If you are like me, you had to google it. I wasn’t sure if it was some summertime thing or what. Well, I was a bit embarrassed when I saw the summary in Wikipedia…
Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America.
I had no idea. I am thankful this day of celebration exists but I’m sad it even had to come to be. Happy Juneteenth everyone – please take a moment today to remember and celebrate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
