Sixth grade, to be exact.<\/p>\n<p>In a scenario of MBA student-turned instructor, the business students used the Darden case study method Tuesday to address the day\u2019s agenda for a group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.k12albemarle.org\/school\/hms\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Henley Middle School<\/a> students: cupcakes and thorny business dilemmas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1367\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8046.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1367 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8046-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8046-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8046-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8046-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Parmar addresses Henley Middle School Students<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an experiential learning experience led by Institute-affiliated Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.darden.virginia.edu\/faculty-research\/directory\/bidhan-l-parmar\/\">Bobby Parmar<\/a>, MBA students currently enrolled in Parmar\u2019s \u201cCollaboration Lab\u201d visited the Crozet middle school to help a 6th grade class of advanced math students navigate their way through a case study entitled, \u201cSweet Success at the Cupcakery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within the case, founder and owner Anna Frosting has to make a decision about how to spend $250,000 in the coming year. Should she give her employees raises? Invest in a new high-tech mixer? Increase advertising? Or donate some funds to Habitat for Humanity, creating good will and possibly increased sales?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1370\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1370\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8069.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1370 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8069-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8069-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8069-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8069-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Darden MBA students advise Henley Middle School students<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Having read the case study prior to the session, each group of four or five Henley students were tasked with weighing the pros and cons of Frosting\u2019s various options. At each table was a Darden student who at first just observed the discussions and then, later in the exercise, offered some guidance about how and what the Henley students might think about as they made their decision.<\/p>\n<p>Through this exercise, the middle school students were able to practice math skills such as reading charts and graphs, and apply that knowledge to a practical problem. They also learned about the impact that a business has on all of its various stakeholder groups and society-at-large, as well as the complexities of ethical decision-making for business leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese decisions aren\u2019t always so easy, are they?\u201d Parmar asked the sixth graders, in a question that was answered with shaking heads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1371\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1371\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8100.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1371 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8100-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8100-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8100-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.darden.virginia.edu\/ibis\/files\/2017\/04\/IMG_8100-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1371\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof. Parmar consults with Darden MBA student instructors<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Darden MBA students had a chance to observe and coach the middle school students, as well as practice their skills in diagnosing and fostering collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>The Henley students seemed delighted by the experience and the chance to put some problem-solving skills to the test.
