Darden community members attended a Diwali celebration at Darden on Saturday, 10 November, hosted by the Darden South Asia Society (DSAS). Diwali is a holiday, also known as the festival of lights, which honors the triumph of good over evil and is celebrated by South Asians around the world through unique cultural traditions. At this year’s Diwali celebration, DSAS showcased several of these traditions by lighting diyas (earthen lamps), creating a Rangoli – colorful artwork designs made on the floor near the entrance to a house – in Darden’s Saunders Hall, hosting a bhangra performance by the University of Virginia’s bhangra dance group, Virginia di Shaan, and serving traditional Indian cuisine.

Diyas were lit in the shape of “om”, a spiritual symbol in Hinduism
