With graduation just a few weeks away, here on the blog, we will be featuring conversations with members of Executive MBA Class of 2019 about their experience at Darden. Today, we catch up with Executive MBA (EMBA) format student, Swarna Mehrotra. After graduation, Swarna will be joining ZS Associates as a Strategy and Insights Planning Consultant in Boston.
Why did you decide to pursue an MBA?
I am a research scientist by training, and I spent most of my professional career working in academic institutions, primarily focusing on cancer research. Although a very rewarding experience, I always felt the need for expediting the process of bringing innovative research to the market and closer to the patients and end users. This nagging thought inspired me to learn the business side of life sciences and attempt to bridge the gap that existed.
Why did you choose Darden?
Choosing a business school that is right for you is never an easy task. It’s a big investment towards your career and therefore requires a lot of thought and planning. However, Darden was an easy choice for me. I live in Charlottesville and therefore have the luxury of having the school nearby. However, the final decision was driven by a) the impressive case method approach, that is the backbone of the program at Darden and b) the program’s strong sense of community.
What’s been the most surprising thing about your experience?
Discovering myself and how Darden has transformed me both as a person and as a professional. When I look back at who I was when I started this program and who I am now, I notice a big change. If not for Darden, I would have never realized my true potential.
What is a favorite memory from your time at Darden?
Traveling to India with my cohort. I grew up in India and have lived in the United States for the past 15 years, so every time I visited India, it was all about catching up with family and enjoying some of the Indian food I grew up with. It was a unique experience to explore India from a business perspective. Dancing to Bollywood tunes, strolling in the busy streets of Old Delhi with my classmates and learning about the changing business landscape in this dynamic economy was truly an exhilarating experience.
What will you miss about Darden?
I will miss my classmates, for their great energy and collaborative spirit both inside and outside of the classroom; the program team who went above and beyond to deliver everything we demanded; and last but not the least, the outstanding faculty who made this educational experience so worth it.
